AUO Selected for Global Lighthouse Network and Leads Charge of 4IR Transformation in Manufacturing

The inclusion of AUO Fab 3 in the Global Lighthouse Network showcases 4IR’s achievements and commitments to the vision of sustainability.

Ultimately, we hope this will improve employee empowerment, autonomy and accountability, and then lead to a successful digital and talent transformation.

AUO today announced that its Taichung Fab 3 has been selected by the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the “Global Lighthouse Network”, reflecting the company’s achievements in the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR). AUO not only increased its production capacity through smart manufacturing and realized its vision of environmental sustainability, but also empowered employees to successfully transform talent.

“The inclusion of AUO in the WEF Global Lighthouse Network has indicated that the Taiwanese manufacturing industry is now on par with the world in Industry 4.0. It is also a major milestone in how AUO is helping other companies embrace smart manufacturing, ”said Paul Peng, president and CEO of AUO. “4IR has brought about a shift in organizational thinking at AUO. Ultimately, we hope this will improve employee empowerment, autonomy and accountability, and then lead to a successful digital and talent transformation. “

4IR Achievements Lead To Inclusion Of Global Lighthouse Network

The Global Lighthouse Network is judged by the WEF and is based on smart factories that demonstrate excellence in the application of automation, Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), AI, AIoT, digitization, big data analytics and 5G technologies. In total, there are 90 locations around the world. The improvement in manufacturing efficiency has been accompanied by optimization of energy efficiency and minimization of pollution to reduce the impact on the environment.

AUO has responded to the intense competition in the industry by launching an organizational transformation campaign. 4IR’s accomplishments in the three aspects of smart manufacturing, green manufacturing, and talent cultivation were all key factors in AUO’s selection as a global flagship. Production management has been changed by the adoption of 4IR technology as well as the integration of domain knowledge and data science techniques. The shift from reactive to preventive management has become AUO’s biggest advantage. Thanks to the investment in organizational thinking transformation, Fab 3’s production costs were reduced by 15% while overall productivity increased by over 30% over a three-year period between 2018 and 2020.

Achieve smart manufacturing with AI and automation technology

Smart Manufacturing 2.0 was introduced by AUO in 2015. The shift from scale competition to value competition and then to value transformation has helped AUO and its partners make a seamless transition to 4IR and smart manufacturing.

The achievements of intelligent manufacturing based on 4IR technology include automated transportation, automated inspection and repair of products using machine learning and vision, integration of IoT architecture and automatic cleaning solution and the development of AI application integration system. Over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020, these initiatives increased overall Fab 3 productivity by 32% and peak manufacturing efficiency by 60%.

Commitment to green manufacturing and the vision of sustainability

AUO’s green solutions were first unveiled in 2008. Achieving the vision of sustainability through carbon and waste reduction initiatives has reduced average energy consumption by at least 1 , 5% each year. The factory has passed US LEED (Green Building) certification and ISO 5001 certification, and the company also obtained Taiwan’s first IPMVP energy performance verification. In 2001, the Taichung plant became the first in Taiwan to achieve ISO 46001 certification of water resource efficiency management system.

4IR technology has accelerated AUO’s promotion of environmental sustainability. AIoT scanning and data science techniques were used to develop the Smart Grid intelligent power grid system which has helped the Taichung plant to successfully reduce water consumption by 23%, carbon emissions by 20%. % and its electricity consumption of 6.4% during the three-year period between 2018 and 2020.

Realizing Employee Potential Through People-Centered Talent Transformation

The heart of 4IR are people, because everything revolves around talent and innovation. To this end, AUO has focused on empowerment, autonomy and empowerment of employees. We have redefined the role of every employee and cultivated 4IR talents in a systematic way. The conversion has been successfully translated into competitiveness.

AUO has also empowered employees by turning the experience of every successful project into technical modules that can be tracked and stacked. These have been effectively deployed at every location so that employees are ready to apply 4IR technology to every opportunity and create a positive feedback loop for innovation. This achievement was the most notable reason for selecting AUO as the Global Lighthouse site.

Converting Experience to Service to Accelerate 4IR Transformation in Industry

AUO also systematically deploys 4IR technology to its upstream and downstream partners and forms strategic alliances with AIoT companies to jointly create a 4IR software-hardware integration ecosystem. AUO works with subsidiaries such as AUO Digitech, AUO MegaInsight, AUO Envirotech and Edgetech to provide professional consulting services, complete solutions based on the integration of software and hardware solutions, AI systems and domain applications , as well as professional expertise in sustainable production and manufacturing. to guide more businesses through the digital transformation process 4IR.
