‘CCTV camera captures footage from toilet’: GN Saibaba goes on hunger strike in Nagpur prison

In their letter on Saturday, Saibaba’s wife, Vasantha Kumari, and brother G Ramadevudu wrote, “On Tuesday (10.05.2022), prison authorities installed a wide-angle CCTV camera in front of his cell anda which can capture a video of the whole cell including , toilet seat, bathing place and everything in the small cell. Thus, he cannot use the toilet for urinals or even take a bath in front of the camera, because the camera records video of everything 24×7 hours. Now, how can Dr. GN Saibaba live under these circumstances? »
“The assistants are also intimidated by the camera watching them closely because their bodies are constantly exposed to the eye of the camera. This is clearly to intimidate and insult him. It is a way to violate his life His right to privacy, life and liberty is in jeopardy because he cannot use the toilet, take a bath or change his clothes in front of a camera that not only runs 24 hours a day , but also records everything and constantly watches in the prison superintendent’s office,” they wrote.
His family said the prisoners were “entitled to all constitutional rights except the right to mobility and a few others”.
“Under these tense conditions, he has decided to go on a hunger strike indefinitely until he dies or (until) the camera is removed, and the responsible prison administrators apologize for knowingly and brutally violated the natural rights of the body and the rights provided by the constitution. Dr. GN Saibaba plans to start his hunger strike within two days at Nagpur Central Jail,” the letter reads.
Saibaba, they added, already suffers from a variety of conditions including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (heart problem), hypertension, paraplegia, kyphoscoliosis of the spine, anterior horn cell disease, acute pancreatitis as well as a cyst in the brain.
“We urge you to take immediate action and provide him with privacy, dignity and order those concerned at Nagpur Central Jail to remove the CCTV cameras which put his privacy at stake and provide him with the proper diagnosis and treatment for all his health. problems immediately. As per his eligibility, grant him parole and allow him to get proper medication and required medical support which is not available in Nagpur,” they wrote.
