Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said yesterday that it is mandatory to install CCTV cameras in all puja mandaps to ensure security during the upcoming Durga Puja.

“Last year we had ordered to install CCTV cameras but it was not respected. There was no camera at the temple (Nanua Dighir By puja mandap in Cumilla)… We could have instantly arrest the perpetrator if the temple had been placed under CCTV coverage,” he said.

The minister was talking to reporters in his secretariat after a law and order meeting during Durga Puja.

A man put the Quran inside the Nanua Dighir Par puja mandap in the town of Cumilla during last year’s Puja on October 13, leading to communal attacks on mandaps as well as Hindu homes in different parts of the country.

A police team then arrested Iqbal Hossain, 35, a resident of Sujanagar area under Cumilla City Corporation, Cox’s Bazar in connection.

During yesterday’s briefing, the minister said that the organizers had been asked to deploy a sufficient number of volunteers to the mandaps.

“Last year law enforcement carried out their duties by patrolling mandaps due to the Covid-19 situation. This year law enforcement and Ansar personnel will be assigned to mandaps,” he said.

The house boss said he would monitor social media platforms and take action if anyone spread a rumour.
