Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said today that it is mandatory to install CCTV camera in all puja mandaps to ensure security during the upcoming Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.

“Last year we had ordered to install CCTV cameras but it was not respected. There was no camera at the temple (Nanua Dighir By puja mandap in Cumilla)… We could have stop instantly if the temple had been placed under the cover of CCTV,” he said.

A man put the Holy Quran inside the Nanua Dighir Par puja mandap in the city of Cumilla during last year’s Puja on October 13 which led to community attacks on the Durga Puja mandaps as well than against Hindu houses in different parts of the country.

A police team arrested Iqbal Hossain, 35, a resident of Sujanagar area under Cumilla City Corporation of Cox’s Bazar.

During today’s briefing, Asaduzzaman said the government had asked the organizers to deploy sufficient numbers of volunteers to the mandaps.

“Last year law enforcement carried out their duties by patrolling mandaps due to the Covid-19 situation, but this year law enforcement and Ansar personnel will be assigned to mandaps,” he said.

The house boss said he would monitor social media and take action if anyone spreads a rumor via the social platform.
