Making 5G a Trusted Network Part 2: Devices

In his in two parts 5G-focused series, NETSCOUT’s Chief Solutions Architect, Dr. Vikram Saksena, outlines the considerations that must be made to make 5G a trusted network. Part II sheds light on cybersecurity and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

As the IoT universe expands to smart devices capable of monitoring and adjusting complex operations in real time, 5G will be the fundamental catalyst for mass adoption. It is estimated that over the next five years, 5G networks will need to support more than 21 billion IoT devices able to transform workflows to dramatically improve efficiency across industries.

Unlike consumer IoT devices, enterprise 5G IoT devices will need network-based protection to prevent inbound and outbound attacks, to support non-critical services for Massive Machine-Type Communication (mMTC ). Enterprises will also need to support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) for mission-critical use cases such as telemedicine and transportation. Both services will require stringent service level agreement (SLA) requirements for performance, reliability, and security.

While security is a critical factor in preventing service disruptions, businesses must also consider latency issues that can result from misconfigured networks, which can lead to serious consequences such as individual device malfunction and failures. login and authentication.

Dr. Saksena concludes by outlining the path operators must take to fully leverage existing network operator skills and experience to successfully protect a disaggregated 5G network architecture.
