Navigating the Edge Infrastructure: Recommendations to Reduce Costs and Time to Deployment

Physical infrastructure is at the heart of any edge computing strategy. Power and cooling equipment and the enclosure support the computing resources that run a variety of applications and enable countless use cases at the edge. Deploying the right physical infrastructure is critical at the edge as many deployments take place in locations without onsite IT support and where remote monitoring and management is required.

Navigating the edge infrastructure is made more complicated by the broad and varied definitions of edge. These factors make it difficult for the 49% of organizations exploring advanced IT deployments. They must make decisions about how to use existing infrastructure and where to invest today to meet the needs of tomorrow. Fortunately, there is an ecosystem of vendors, systems integrators, and other channel partners with experience and expertise in edge deployments to provide support.

Building on Vertiv’s work on Edge Archetypes, which provided a taxonomy to categorize Edge use cases, the related special report: Ready-to-deploy Edge Archetypes 2.0 infrastructure models, pushes these archetypes a little further to define four distinct edge infrastructure models. The framework is based on interviews with a range of industry practitioners, data center experts, solution providers and industry organizations in smart city, healthcare, manufacturing and retail.

Main conclusions:

  • Edge IT infrastructure will not replace the cloud. The total number of edge sites is expected to grow 226% from 2019 to 2025. The cloud will continue to grow at a CAGR of 10%.
  • The United States is leading the way with edge initiatives and is believed to be the largest edge computing market, driven by key industries such as manufacturing.
  • Edge archetypes were a first step towards Edge categorization, identifying Edge deployments based on use cases. New edge infrastructure models go even further by enabling standardization of equipment and custom design that can increase efficiency and reduce costs and time to deployment. The four edge infrastructure models are Device Edge, Micro Edge, Distributed Edge Data Center, and Regional Edge Data Center.
  • Most critical archetypal use cases will use the Device Edge infrastructure model in the medium term, while data intensive, human latency sensitive, and machine to machine latency sensitive data use cases will accelerate the transition.   • Coordinating the many elements of edge computing (software, hardware, infrastructure, etc.) is a challenge and requires an ecosystem of partners to support the 66% of businesses that prefer to have a complete edge solution sourced from within. ‘a single main supplier.
