Nominations open for the Pragmatic Visionary Greg Steltenpohl Prize

The Greg Steltenpohl Pragmatic Visionary Award, established in memory of natural products pioneer and plant-based visionary Greg Steltenpohl, is now accepting applications for its first $100,000 grant to plant-based food startups .

Steltenpohl, the founder of Odwalla and Califia Farms, died in March 2021 after dedicating his life to changing the food system through business.

Each year, a start-up food business will receive a $100,000 grant to sustain or expand the achievements, reach and impact of their work. Along with the merit of the team and its strategy, plant-centric initiatives will be evaluated for their embodiment of four fundamental entrepreneurial principles that Greg has championed throughout his career: systemic entrepreneurship, pragmatic vision, leadership ethics and creative transformation.

To qualify, a business must be an established for-profit business; operate within the broader food system; identify as plant-centered; and be in the early stages of development.

Nominations can be submitted to between October 1 and November 30. Innovators at all levels of the food system, from “ground to soul”, are eligible. Details of submission requirements are available on the website. The award recipient will be notified in February.

“Our industry and our world are better off because of Greg, and this award aims to encourage and support innovators, entrepreneurs and change-makers in creating the more positive, plant-centric food system he has dedicated his life to. life to build,” said Gary Hirshberg, co-founder of Stonyfield and friend of Steltenpohl for 30 years.

The award, which is scheduled to be presented annually at Natural Products Expo West, is organized in conjunction with Plant Futures Initiative, Steltenpohl’s latest entrepreneurial collaboration.

The nonprofit Plant Futures initiative connects college and graduate students to experiential learning opportunities in a network of innovative food and agriculture companies. He is dedicated to accelerating transitions to sustainable and healthy food systems and developing the future leadership needed to lead the way. Grantees will participate in a documentary case study to share and inspire others to implement ways to transform the world of entrepreneurship, capitalism and culture.
