Mumbai:

Five people have been killed and eight injured after a high-speed car rammed three cars and an ambulance at a crash site on the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai late last night.

The horrific crash, which happened around 3 a.m. Wednesday, was recorded by CCTV cameras.

Visuals show the car crashing into the ambulance and other cars parked to the side after an earlier crash. The ambulance was preparing to take the accident victims to the hospital when the second accident took place.

Footage appears to show a person trying to divert traffic. He jumps out of reach of the speeding car at the last moment.

Several vehicles were damaged in the accident.

Thirteen people, including a woman and a Sea Link employee, were injured. Five were declared dead during treatment. Six of the injured are in different hospitals. Two other people were allowed to leave after being treated for minor injuries, police said.

Two cars were reduced to mangled metal.

The sea link is a lifeline for those traveling to the most prominent areas of the city.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“Painted by the loss of life due to an accident on the Bandra-Worli sea link in Mumbai. Condolences to the bereaved families. I hope those who were injured recover quickly,” the PMO office tweeted.

Following the accident, the police took the injured to the hospital with the help of the local population. The authorities then closed the road from Bandra to Worli.
